CWES Church
A Church For Families
We are a church for families on a new journey in life, faith, and to Canada.
Who We Are
Calgary Wesleyan Church (CWES) is a church for families on a new journey in life. You may be new to Canada; new to our City; or searching for a new community of faith that will support your desire to follow Jesus Christ in relationship with others. We know how challenging it is to find friendship and community in a new city. CWES Church might be just right for you!
CWES is part of The Wesleyan Church (TWC), a global network of churches in the evangelical-holiness tradition. Our shared vision is “transforming lives, churches and communities through the hope and holiness of Jesus Christ.”
The Wesleyan Church is named in honour of the Rev. John Wesley, an Anglican priest in the 18th century who founded the Methodist movement. Wesley’s vision was to see the renewal of authentic, powerful Christianity; passionate evangelism; selfless service to people in need; and a lifestyle of personal holiness. The Methodist movement was first introduced to Canada in the 1700s in Eastern Canada through Rev. Laurence Coughlin, and in the United States of America through Rev. Francis Asbury. Methodism in North America gave birth to several new denominations, including The Wesleyan Church in 1843. To learn more, click here:
CWES is a multi-ethnic church, with a rich history in our City. God called Rev. Andrew Risby to pioneer Calgary’s first black church in 1947. But Pastor Risby’s vision embraced our city’s multi-cultural population. We are building on his foundation today with a renewed vision & purpose.
The biblical foundation for our Vision today is Psalm 96:3. We will “declare God’s glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.”
Our Purpose is “to make fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ among the nations in Calgary and beyond.”
We are focused on making disciples of Jesus, who make other disciples of Jesus. We seek to glorify God through worship that is creative and contemporary, and that expresses love for our immigrant neighbours, senior citizens, the hungry, and families with young children. Our dream is to become a church that reflects what heaven ultimately will be like in Revelation 7:9-10.
